	Long before CPX I had set up OpenWebMail (.org) which is pretty
fast and rather full featured.  It can also be configured to allow login
by e-mail address rather than user name (see "user alias mapping").  The
readme has installation instructions; you would need to adjust the
pathnames to match a VPS.  The one oddity that is not obvious is that
there are "filters" enabled by default to send some spam to the trash
folder.  Also the default buttons are sorta clunky but there are plenty
of other themes from which to choose.
