While I agree that lowercase usernames are definitely a good thing, I
don't think it is fair to blame sendmail for limitations imposed by
OSes and other software that interact with it. To see that sendmail
*can* in fact send mail to uppercase users, try this:

Pick a domain on one of your VPSes (we'll call it mydomain.com for
this example). Then telnet to its port 25 (this shows only my side of
the conversation):

telnet mydomain.com 25
ehlo gmail.com
mail from:<benlanford@xxxxxxxxx>
rcpt to:<POSTMASTER@xxxxxxxxxxxx>
data
[Enter whatever text you want here, followed by a dot on a line all by itself]
quit

Actually, my experience is that e-mail addresses tend to be
case-insensitive: benlanford@xxxxxxxxx is the same as
BenLanford@xxxxxxxxx, etc. I *definitely* agree that VPS user names
should be lowercase!!!

(Now that I've opened my big mouth, I'm sure that someone will be able
to shoot holes in this response ... in short order ...)

Ben.

(P.S. See RFCs 2142, 2821 and 2822 for more hints about case in e-mail
addresses.)

There are 10 kinds of people: those that understand binary and those that don't.
