Re: [cpx] CPX Quirk -- Tom, Dick & Harry

Brian:

It appears that when an email is sent to a subdomain it won't forward.
At least not on my VPS3. To duplicate more easily, I have removed the
unnecessary complexity of multiple aliases from my earlier scenario.

To prove that it works when sent to a "domain":
. I created a user named "aaa" and put him in domain.com
. I sent an email to him at aaa@xxxxxxxxxx
. As expected, it arrived just fine
. Then "aaa" changed his "mail forward" to zzz@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
. I sent a 2nd email to him, the email was forwarded just fine
. Everything worked as expected.

Important:
. For this to work I added an MX record for subdomain.domain.com
. And I left the MX record for domain.com there

To prove that it "does not" work when sent to a "subdomain":
. I created a user named "bbb" and put him in subdomain.domain.com
. I sent an email to him at bbb@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
. As expected, it arrived just fine
. Then "bbb" changed his "mail forward" to zzz@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
. I sent a 2nd email to him, but it was "not" forwarded
. It was delivered to the "bbb" local folder instead.
. This was not as expected.

Notes:
. It works if I add "bbb: zzz@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" to the aliases file
. But end users are not able to hand edit that file
. None of the above scenarios made any updates to the "aliases" file
. They must be using something I haven't figured out, like procmail

I can't duplicate your findings.
To be clear, your message was cute, but not clear.

I have, in CPX speak, an Email Address that points to a User on the same
server and domain.
From within the above User Account I have Mail Forwarding setup to deliver
to an email address which is also a user on the same box in my case.

Works fine, but I would ask that CPX add to the parenthesis, that an email
address is required. I once just put a user in the box and this didn't work.

CPX Quirk -- Tom, Dick & Harry

tom@ is an alias.

dick@ is a mailbox.

The tom@ aliases forwards to the dick mailbox.

Everything's cool.

But then one day dick goes on vacation.
During which time he wants his email forwarded to the harry mailbox.
So mere mortal Dick-Dick-Dick goes to his Mail-Mail-Mail settings.
He changes the MAIL-FORWARD-FORWARD-FORWARD to the harry@ ADDRESS-ADDRESS

Not so cool, the mail is delivered to dick's mailbox.
It sits there unattended until Dick returns.
And it is never delivered to the harry email address (i.e. his mailbox).

Company loses sale, goes bankrupt, reseller loses customer, so sad.

What should have happened? I think it should have gone to harry, but no.

BTW, had the tom & dick aliases been forwarded "directly" to the harry
mailbox it would have worked.

What does it all mean?
Perhaps that; alias deliveries override mailbox deliveries.
Perhaps that; first delivery instructions rule, 2nd delivery instruction
drool.

Nice to know, but it didn't do what dick expected it to do.
Find him Mondays & Wednesdays at the freeway off-ramp.
Tuesdays & Thursdays at the Union Gospel Mission.
